Brilliant - there is no other word for it. This is one of the most riveting books I have read for a long time. Best suited to older children and teenagers who have a taste for mystery and magic.
It is not as horrifying as the skull adorned cover suggests. This is the third novel in the Hell's Underground series.
Paul Rector, the Renegade, has been sent back to 1830's London in a bid to prevent his powerful ancestor Samuel Rector freeing King Lud from his imprisonment in a hidden site where five gates meet.
Samuel appears to have the entire of the East End under his control. His Rat Boys are feared. Each has a demon seed inside them, giving them menacing power. Their only match is Paul, aided by Chaim and Betsy.
Who is going to win this desperate struggle? And just who are the mystery fire priests and the Court of Destiny? Questions remain unanswered - the next book in this series is eagerly awaited. A fascinating twist on the usual good versus evil theme.
The historical period is well drawn, you really feel the poverty, the terror and the desperation of people trying to survive in deep poverty.
