Perfect for teenagers, this is a story of love and loss across the years. From the Rosewarnes with their lost children, to evacuees Ellen and Jack to the modern day story of Cassie and Scott, we see different ways of dealing with the same theme.
Through it all is the story of Selina Penaluna. Just what was she? A mermaid changeling or just a very mixed up young girl? Desperate to escape her lonely life with an abusive father; Selina makes friends with Jack, a teenage London evacuee.
Jack and his sister Ellen have been taken in by a well-off family who eventually adopt them when their parents are killed in the bombing. Although the favorite, Jack is constantly rebelling not wanting to be in Devon and seeks freedom with Selina.
His sister Ellen tries hard, relishing the opportunity to improve herself. How can the conflicting plans be reconciled? And what of Cassie, Ellen's modern day grand daughter? What does the future hold for her as she too begins to learn the lesson of love?
A haunting tale, it leaves you thinking and always just that bit uncertain. Well written, with a lot of sympathy towards the characters of Ellen and Selina. Their characters come vividly to life.
