An entertaining children's book about Emily Windsnap, half girl, half mermaid. Along with her friends Shona and Aaron, Emily is sent back to Bridport.
The merfolk town of Shiprock is in danger from human exploitation. So Neptune has set them the task of saving Shiprock while bringing humans and merfolk together. Faced with little success and thrown out of mermaid school, Emily gets caught up in a search for lost sirens.
Trapped in an undersea cavern, the siren's story becomes linked to her own problems. Can she save the sirens? Can she persuade Neptune to change his mind? Finding out about toleration, getting communities to work together requires new skills and ideas.
In solving one problem, Emily finds that she gains more than she ever expected. She is a very likeable character trying to cope with growing up in a mixed community; trying to learn how to deal with scorn and humiliation even as she tries to do good.
