A crime novel set across time slipping worlds. Eighteenth century musician Charles Patterson is a harpichordist who cannot resist solving mysteries. Set in Northern England, Patterson's role as concert director has been usurped by a family of Italians.
He is being pursued by various ruffians intent on attacking him, and someone is trying to break into the house inhabited by Esther Jerdoun, the woman he loves. Then Julia Mazzanti is found dead in the street.
Who killed her and why? Who is the father of her unborn child? Why is a psalm teacher keeping watch over the house? Are there spies for foreign powers in the town? The spirits are not always helpful and all too frequently, Patterson finds himself slipping from one world to another unexpectedly finding Julia Mazzanti alive in one world, but dead in another.
A very entertaining story which keeps you reading. You positively have to know what happens next. This is the third in Roz Southey's series of novels about Charles Patterson's adventures - and hopefully there are lots more to come.
Patterson is a very engaging hero, and you can see him growing and developing as a character as each novel progresses. A must for any lover of history mysteries.
