A well crafted children's book, ideal for teenagers. Set in the 1850's, Thomas has inherited a magical box from his grandmother. It gives him entry into a mysterious garden where her ghost informs him that she was poisoned.
She had belonged to an arcane group of people who had all created gardens of various kinds in which the arts of perfume, medicine and poison could found. Then others begin to die - and Thomas himself is in danger.
Can he solve the mystery in time? And what of the girl Maud? What role does she play? The answers lie deep in time and Thomas is faced with some hard choices. A very engrossing book with a superb plot.
The characters leap out of the pages as you read, you feel sympathy with the dilemma in which Thomas and Maud find themselves. A very good read.
