A real doorstep of a book. This is not something you can read in an evening but it is compelling reading. I started it a bit hesitant about the storyline and the sheer weight of the book - but quickly became engrossed.
Mikael Blomkvist is a journalist who has made a mistake, he forget to check his sources. The result is a court action which leaves him facing a prison sentence and his publication in tatters. Wealthy industrialist Henrik Vanger throws him a lifeline - research a family mystery and find out what happened.
In return, there will be investment for Blomkvist's magazine. Vanger is convinced that someone within his family murdered a young girl forty years ago. As Mikael begins to delve into the murky depths of family history, it becomes clear that someone does not want him to succeed.
Linked into all this is Lisbeth Salander, a dangerous computer hacker who has a knack for finding out information - but who also possesses very few moral restrictions and social responsibilities. The burgeoning relationship between Mikael and Lisbeth is fascinating to watch.
All the way through there are red herrings by the score, twists and turns in the story which render you speechless and a climatic conclusion that is totally unexpected. Definitely worth reading.
