The brand new Eiffel Tower is the glory of the 1889 Universal Exposition. Everyone wants to go up, see the view and sign their names in the visitors book. Bookseller Victor Legris is no exception. But events take a disturbing turn. A woman collapses and dies in front of him. There are no clues, no reasons for her death - except the presence of a bee not far away. Then reports start surfacing of other people dying in similiarly mysterious circumstances. Legris is worried - could his partner or his lover be involved? Quietly Legris starts to investigate. A fascinating book, full of the atmosphere of late nineteenth century France, mixing and crossing between conventional lifestyles and that of the bohemian artists who inhabit the Left Bank; as well as women seeking a measure of independance through work.Worth reading. The storyline is strong, and intriguing. Victor Legris makes an interesting hero, caught between his own prejudices and changing views yet willing to learn and adapt.
