Unbelievable that this reviewer criticizes Barzun. It must be that Pinker's books are written for the illiterati...and thus why the reviewer is so enthralled--simple things for simple minds. I doubt that I'll read any of Pinkers books now.

Thanks for your detailed review of the new book by one of my favorite authors. I've read and enjoyed Pinker's books, especially 'The Blank Slate,' and I'm looking forward to reading this new work. I came here to get a bit of an advanced peek at the ideas put forth. I did get that, but I also enjoyed your writing. The beginning and end sentences were clever and well written. The rest of the review gave a nice summary of what to expect from each chapter. Good job!
