The world changes when Lucy, an eleven year old schoolgirl, is knocked down by a car. She returns from hospital to find a hidden talent has emerged - an ability to talk and communicate with animals. It is a talent that quickly leads her into trouble. News on the animet - universal links between animals - alert her to problems appearing in the South American jungle where jaguars are being milked for their bile. Ruthless gangsters are out to make money from the much desired substance.
Attempting to save the jaguars leads Lucy to a confrontation with drug gangs, kidnapping and ending up alone in the jungle trying to save her father with the aid of a miscellaneous collection of animals including giant sloths and monkeys. It is an engrossing story and will appeal to all children who like animals. It is not an easy read - it requires concentration and unlike many writers, Alric has not dumbed down the language to its lowest common denominator.
There are a lot of funny incidents- Lucy sends in wild pigs to cover her escape from the drug runners by covering the site with loads of dung; in another scene gangsters find themselves being attacked by ants. Well worth reading. 4 stars.
