Book Review: Illumination

By Sandy Amazeen Jun 5, 2009, 21:19 GMT

This groundbreaking publication lives up to its title as it examines the work of four female artists whose collective bodies of work span the twentieth century. Although much has been written about the life and works of Georgia O’Keeffe and to a lesser extent Agnes Martin, until recently Agnes Pelton and Florence Miller Pierce remained largely unknown. Insightful essays by Karen Moss, Timothy Robert Rodgers, Sharyn R. Udall and Michael Zakian compare the lives, education, spirituality, inspiration and styles of these four amazing artists and the parallels between them may surprise readers.

Lavish illustrations document artist development while demonstrating each artists handling of light, color and subject while balancing their need to make a living as well as expressing their inner vision. A well thought out collection that is sure to foster a new appreciation for the work of these talented women.
