Philosophy, physics and astronomy professor Victor Stenger takes the existence of God at face value by subjecting beliefs in His existence to the same set of scientific principles and arguments that are used to test any theory. Opening with a compelling series of models that test the arguments for God’s existence, Stenger draws a convincing “lack-of-evidence” stance. Stenger then tackles the different nuances of the “intelligent design” theories, exposing the often glaring flaws in those arguments for God’s presence in life’s creation and existence. The human soul, ESP, prayer, miracles and immortality are examined in some detail, as are some of the conclusions coming out of the fields of physics and astronomy that would seem to point to the existence of a universal creator. After a thorough review, the author concludes there is no evidence for the existence of God, that the universe is exactly the way one would expect it to be without a God.
It is unfortunate that most of the louder, more opinionated proponents for God’s “will” won’t read this lucid body of work. Counterarguments to criticisms leveled at the first, hardcover edition are included in the new paperback version. Logical, accessible and thought provoking arguments provide plenty to consider and although they will not sway the true believer, are well worth taking the time to examine at length.
