Book Review: Elvis Presley: The Family Album
By Sandy Amazeen Nov 6, 2007, 2:46 GMT

This is a photo collection for those who wish to remember the “ideal” Elvis, the man in his youth before the ravages of fame, concert tours and overeating took their toll. A nice sample of early snapshots and school photos make up the first chapter while the rest of the book is comprised almost exclusively of pictures taken during the 1950’s and 60’s. The second chapter offers plenty of early road, broadcast and recording shots rounded out with some of the publicity photos taken while Elvis was serving in the Army. Assorted behind the scenes and staged shots from films like Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, Blue Hawaii and Viva Las Vegas fill the Hollywood chapter while Graceland, naturally enough, covers the many facets of Elvis’s home life including his family and candid photos. The many sidebars by Elvis’s personal friend George Klein add insights to the photo collection although they are unfailingly positive, leaving readers to wonder if the “King” ever had an off day or said an unkind word.
