Interweave Press takes lace knitting in a different direction with this collection of innovative patterns for demure accessories, cobwebby lingerie and an assortment of feminine tops. If the whole idea of using tiny needles and thread-fine yarn has kept you from attempting lace knitting, think again as the lovely “Tailored Scallops” jacket uses chunky weight worked on a size 10 ˝ needle. The majority of these fresh designs are worked with sport weight or heavier yarn making these patterns easy and much quicker to work up then traditional lace work. Even the beginner could tackle projects like the “Retro Dedux Shrug” which, like most of the designs, owes its lacy look to simple yarnovers and knitting stitches together. Be sure to check out the “Lacy Waves Top” featuring an eye-catching asymmetrical front insert with matching lace-look sleeves worked up in DK weight. Although pictured in brown, this would be stunning in a sea blue/green to further the effect of the wave insert. For the adventurous, look for the “Sterling and Crystal Cuff”, an airy bracelet knit from silver wire with beads on the edging.
The Design Notebook located in the back is a nice addition as it is loaded with information including abbreviations, basic stitches, the interplay of yarnovers and decreases plus a variety of edgework and finishing details. There is also a guide to reading knitting charts and especially helpful, a segment covering common mistakes and how to fix them. With emphasis on using larger yarns, basic stitches and easily remembered repeats, this is one of the most accessible lace knitting books on the market and well worth bookshelf space.
