Think of this as a sock pattern anthology filled with favorite patterns that were first printed in Interweave Knits, Spin-Off and Piecework magazines along with some new ones from such noted designers as Priscilla Gibson-Roberts and Nancy Bush. The result is a collection of smart, often surprisingly simple designs that yield stunning results. Techniques vary from the usual four needles, top down approach to knitting from the bottom up or using two circular needles in the construction of a resoleable sock to name a few. Many designs such as “Uptown Boot Socks” incorporate cable variations for elasticity while providing visual interest. “Ilga’s Socks” combine mythological Latvian symbols with subdued color use with traditional appeal. The different heel flap techniques include a heel worked after the rest of the sock is finished, a reinforced honeycomb stitch and a garter stitch edge. Ann Budd’s charming “Lace-Cuff Anklets” are worked with progressively smaller needles to create a lacey cuff that lays nicely when folded down.
These are patterns sock knitters will be using repeatedly, mixing and matching the techniques as their confidence and ability grows. The glossary includes a comprehensive abbreviation key and clear line drawings covering cast-ons, grafting, short-rows, picking up stitches and more. There are no close-up photos of the yarns used but there is a supplies list in the back that includes on-line addresses. Most of these patterns are accessible to the beginning sock knitter yet challenge the experienced knitter to expand their repertoire with the many different techniques.
