As an anorexia survivor and author of “Solitaire”, a documentary of her teenage battles with the problem, Aimee Liu knows too well the myths and half-truths surrounding eating disorders. Thirty years later, she revisits the issue with an eye towards the lifelong impacts eating disorders have on former anorexics and bulimics as they face the challenges that come with family, career and social pressures. Aimee Liu “comes clean” about some unresolved problems glossed over in “Solitaire” as she confronts the same stigmas that faced her as a teenager while exploring the misconceptions surrounding this disease. Old beliefs are destroyed in the face of mounting research which points to the involvement of a genetic link that may cause a predisposition toward the disease, much like alcoholism and demonstrates that this is not just a “white girls” illness.
Interviews with members of her preteen and high school peer groups along with a broad spectrum of survivors worldwide, Aimee Liu provides a rare and insightful look at this misunderstood ailment that is certain to become a “must read” for sufferers and their families as they struggle to come to terms with their illness.
