From Monsters and Critics.com Books News Balanchine Variations is the title of the new book by Nancy Golder, published by University Press of Florida. A slim book, finishing at 160 pages, one that the NYT describes as, “Balanchine Variations is in every sense a vade-mecum (“Go with me”): a pocket-size reference book that is also a companion, a guide, a friend.” Taken from the book description, “Goldner discusses the history of each ballet, places each in the context of Balanchine's life and sensibility. She also addresses his taste in music and whether his style can be considered particularly American. “Slim enough to fit into a jacket pocket, it surveys 22 of Balanchine’s most popular ballets; it’s good-humored, enthusiastic and undictatorial; it gives you numerous things to look out for in any performance; and it abounds with insights,” the NYT also adds.
