Lance Armstrong Among Champions Featured in 'Dream It Do It: Inspiring Stories of Dreams Come True'

By James Wray Jul 24, 2004, 6:49 GMT

Lance Armstrong overcame cancer
Few people remember that in his first professional cycling race in Spain in 1992, legendary cyclist Lance Armstrong came in dead last. The 111th racer to cross the finish line, he was mocked and ridiculed. It's a wonder he didn't quit. But competitive cycling was too important for him to just give up. He got back on his bike and, later that year, he placed second at the Championships of Zurich.

The qualities that champions like Lance Armstrong are made of -- courage, confidence, persistence, passion, resilience -- are explored in detail in the self-help book "Dream It Do It: Inspiring Stories of Dreams Come True".

The authors interviewed over 120 champions in their fields to discover what makes them tick. In "Dream It Do It" they feature 37 stories of real-life dream-achievers, including:

Lance Armstrong, whose courage helped him survive cancer in multiple sites and come back to compete in and win the most grueling cycling competition in the world

Cale Kenney, who became a champion skier despite losing her left leg, hip, and pelvis in a motorcycle accident

Golfing legend Tiger Woods, who at the age of 21 became the youngest golfer ever to be ranked number one.

Champions outside of sports are featured too, including:

Actor Harrison Ford, who struggled for 14 years before breaking into Hollywood

Singer Gloria Estefan, who overcame shyness to become an international singing sensation

Business executive Nancy Archuleta, who rose above the disadvantages of being a high school dropout and a teen mom to become CEO of a successful engineering firm.

The authors, Arizona-based Sharon Cook and Colorado-based Graciela Sholander, have appeared on radio and television and conduct "Dream It Do It" seminars throughout the nation. They share interesting, little-known facts about famous dream achievers and tell inspiring stories of people who've become champions despite overwhelming obstacles.

Check out the book's details here. For those interested in Lance Armstrong, he has a international bestseller called, It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life. More info on that one in the database.
