According to USA Today, the reviewer notes: “Judged on literary merit, Sherry Jones' The Jewel of Medina is a dud.”
What is funny is that the reviewer then goes on to state: “And, yes, it is offensive to see Mohammed, his favorite wife, A'isha, and the founding of Islam trivialized as plot devices in a trite romance novel.”
Some of the comments are telling this reviewer to get over herself. As for the book’s literary merit, the reviewer very may well be correct, but to be “offended” by such nonsense?

“Born Aisha bint Abi Bakr in seventh century Arabia, she would become the favorite wife of the Prophet Muhammad, and one of the most revered women in the Muslim faith. Married at the age of nine, The Jewel of Medina illuminates the difficult path Aisha confronted, from her youthful dreams of becoming a Bedouin warrior, to her life as the beloved wife and confident of the founder of Islam.”
This book, of course, was under much controversy many months ago, blah, blah, blah and it’s not really worth rehashing. But if you’d like to read the USA Today review, click here .
Beaufort is the publisher--it’s the same publisher that published O.J. Simpson’s tripe, so when there is a topic controversial enough to stir up a media frenzy, you can bet that Beaufort will be there to sniff out the cracks, and ultimately publish whatever book--regardless of literary value or quality.
