My version is a Bantam paperback put out in 1962 (which is when I read the book; too young for such strong stuff). It has a tawdry drawing adorning the cover, of a half-undressed couple boozing it up. But better than a cover with two movie stars on it; I refuse to buy those.
Yates had a bleak vision of life (his life was bleak, and it ended sadly: he died alone in a VA Hospital). Sometimes he can have a character suddenly face a weakness or a delusion about themselves, and he can make you wince in commiseration. We poor mortals!
