According to a recent Reuters article, Barnes & Noble Booksellers has not had the best of sales. With rising gas prices, a bad economy, and the high cost of food, bookstores are suffering sales losses, as are most retail stores. In fact, Barnes & Noble and Borders may merge.
The article states: “Borders said in March that it might sell itself as it has struggled with liquidity and the soft economy, and Barnes & Noble has said it is studying a potential acquisition of the company.”
The article goes into some details regarding the loss, and this year bookstores are also feeling the crunch because they don’t have a new J.K. Rowling book to fall back on, at least not right now.
The article mentions how the release of Rowling’s final Harry Potter installment helped to boost sales tremendously last year, something that the sellers cannot count on now.
Best-selling titles included the following fluff titles: John Grisham's "The Appeal," Randy Pausch's "The Last Lecture," Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food," Sophie Kinsella's "Remember Me?" and Jodi Picoult's "Change of Heart."
Well, at least it’s not James Frey. Click here to read more.
