Chester Gillette, who is based on the killer in Theodore Dreiser’s novel An American Tragedy, now has had his diary published by Hamilton College the AP notes.
The Prison Diary and Letters of Chester Gillette is the title, and according to the article, it is “a book that reveals the 25-year-old's private thoughts as he awaited his execution in Auburn State Prison for the murder of Grace Brown.”
The book’s coeditors mention on the article that the killer’s writings “do provide a window to Gillette's character.”
The article also mentions that the diary is not larded with bitterness, for it is believed that Gillette was coming to terms with his own death, which now approaches the 100 year anniversary mark.
