The NYT has mentioned in an article several titles to books that might make great holday gifts.
Some of them included The Stuff of Thought, by Steven Pinker. The article describes the book as, “is serious linguistics done in understandable style by Harvard’s most eminent explicator.”
An in-depth interview with Pinker can be read here and a review here.
Another recommendation is the Dictionary of American Slang Fourth Edition, revised by Barbara Ann Kipfer. The article states the book, “covers much of the informal usage of the 19th and 20th centuries.”
Also, The Elements of Journalism, by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel. The NYT states, “Don’t even think of becoming a reporter, editor, columnist or influential blogger without reading this modern classic.”
