Eric Lax has a new book called CONVERSATIONS WITH WOODY ALLEN His Films, the Movies, and Moviemaking. Lax is known for his previous biography on Allen. In this book Allen discusses his films, the directors he admires (notably Orson Welles) as well as those favorites Allen directed himself.
He has always admitted to not understanding the public’s fascination with Manhattan or Annie Hall, and then goes on to note, in the New York Times, some of his own favorites: The Purple Rose of Cairo, Zelig, Stardust Memories, and Manhattan Murder Mystery to name a few.
The NYT has said, “This is the Woody we’ve come to know well: the godless, affectless, clarinet-tootling, awards-ceremony-shunning workaholic who will give neither himself nor his audience the satisfaction of sitting back and taking pleasure in his achievements.”
The book description notes, “Conversations with Woody Allen is essential reading for everyone interested in the art of moviemaking and for everyone who has enjoyed the films of Woody Allen.”
