J.K. Rowling’s next writing plans
By M&C News Jul 27, 2007, 6:37 GMT
In a USA Today article, Rowling has stated that she is working on 2 projects simultaneously. One that is for children and the other that is for adults. And although she knows the public’s expectation will be high, she does not delude herself into thinking the same sort of phenomenon will occur again.
"I think that there will be some disappointment if I don't write another fantasy," she says. "But I must admit, I think I've done my fantasy. To go and create another fantasy universe would feel wrong, and I don't know if I'm capable of it,” Rowling says in the article.
There has been much debate whether the Potter books will last, years from now. Many believe the books to be classics and those that will sell years from now, while others believe, because of their lack of literary quality, that they will fall away.
Everyone has an opinion, and no one can predict 50 years from now. When asked about this, Rowling said in the article, “When all the hype and everything else dies down, they will have to float or sink on their own merits, won't they? So in 50 years time, if people are still reading them, they deserve to be read, and if they're not, then that's OK."
In the short term, the books have certainly proven themselves, but now they are in for the long haul since immediate success is no guarantee of a work’s long-term lasting quality.
After all, no one really remembers The Valley of the Dolls. Rowling said in the article that her focus now is to continue her writing as well as taking time off to spend with her husband and three children.
