Booksellers are saying they won’t make money off Harry Potter

According to Reuters, big chain booksellers like Barnes & Noble and Borders are whining that they won’t be making much money off the new Harry Potter book due to the increased discounts, many of which are up to 40 and 50 percent off the retail price. Independent booksellers are also claiming they won’t be carrying the book, knowing that people can get better deals from super chains like Walmart or online retailers like Amazon, who both have slashed their prices to nearly 50 percent of the original $34.99 price. Barnes & Noble and Borders are sticking with their 40 percent discount, however.
It is because of these discounts that many retailers are not enthused about the book’s release. If anything, they look at it as a way of getting customers into the store to purchase, and hopefully that will lead them to buy another book in addition to Harry Potter while they are there.
Rowling’s seventh book will be released on July 21. It will no doubt be a big event for Harry Potter fans, but retailers will not be sharing in the joy.
