Nirvana: The Biography

Age twenty-seven seems to be a familiar end for many musicians. Not only for the death of Kurt Cobain, who shot himself, but for legends like Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin as well. Because of these young deaths, in addition to their influential music,
there will most likely always be a public interest in uncovering why it happened.

In this biography by Everett True, titled Nirvana: The Biography, True attempts to uncover some of the reasons for Cobain’s decline towards suicide, as well as his own personal history with the band throughout this 656-page work. Some have implied the biography to be excessively verbose, containing long and in depth interviews with anyone who has ever met Cobain, with little editing of the mundane points. Partly ambivalent to Cobain and Nirvana, True is opinionated, and questions if Cobain or the band had any real influence on rock. He also questions the level of Cobain’s talent, and was it all just the "live fast, die young" cliché familiar with many musicians. "Kurt Cobain left one of the best-looking corpses around," is one of the things he mentions when he digresses on Cobain’s history. Some have criticized this work to be primarily True’s story, with Nirvana ‘sprinkled in the background,’ but either way it is meant to dig up the old questions about artists and their reckless lives. And as for if you agree with his conclusions, you’ll just have to read the work to see.
