According to UNI the Delhi police has unravelled a racket related to piracy of books with the arrest of six people and recovery of over 13500 books valued at over Rs 1.35 crore (approx. $315.000).
The huge stock of pirated books, which included many Harry Potter books, 'You Can Win' by Shiv Khera and 'The Da Vinci Code' by Dan Brown, was seized in course of simultaneous raids at five locations in the city. Six people were arrested in course of the raids.
The raids and arrests came on a complaint recieved from the Publishers Association of UK, Harper Collins and other foreign publishing houses in which it was alleged that a well established clandestine network involved in printing and distribution of high value pirated books was operating in Delhi.
Investigation revealed that one of the accused Badan Singh, who ran a photostat shop at a hostel in AIIMS used to prepare duplicate books related to medical stream and sold the duplicate books for a few hundreds while the originals were priced at Rs 10000 ($230.00) to Rs 30000 ($690.00).
