Maybe the cover is a reflection of the events in the last book. There has to be some kind of apocalyptic battle since this is the book that ends the story, hence the carnage in the background. Hmm maybe Harry becomes twisted by his abilities, joins the dark side and destroys Lord V to take his place as well as destroying everything he (Harry) used to love and stood for. All that remains to be seen.
I think the cover is great. First, the wraparound quality seems to indicate Harry and Voldemort locked in a struggle. Both wandless (we know what happens when their wands fight) they seem to be reaching for space above. They also seem to be in an amphetheater .. not the 'evident distruction' mentioned above but more of classic ruins that have always haunted the series.
There have been debates as to what the 'Deathly Hallows' actually are. Weather they are 'deadly hallowed ground', or graveyard, or some sort of church or even a symbolic place is 'sacred' to Harry or Voldemort remains to be seen ...
But having the cover indicating that the two are locked in combat is a perfectly fitting way to cover this book. My Kudo's to Mrs. GrandPre, and Mrs. Rowling.
This is how the story ends:
VOLDEMORT: 'Harry, I am your father!'
HARRY: No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!
VOLDEMORT: Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
HARRY: No! No! No!
---
HARRY: Dumbledore! Why didn't you tell me? You told me Voldemort murdered my father!
ETHERIAL, BLUE-TINGED DD.: When your father turned to the dark side and became Lord Voldemort, James Potter ceased to exist; so in a way, Lord Voldemort did kill your father.
Voldemort: Luke I am your father!,
Luke: realllyy??? miinnneeee??..... don't spread it around.
Harry: WTF is going on guys
Voldemort: Look harry STFU for a second, me and luke are having a father son moment.
Harry: FYYNNEEEEEEEe
*pulls out his wand and kills them both, and then instantaneously marry's Princess Liala.*
*hogwarts burns down*
THE END!
Why would Rowling want to steal part of Star Wars for her ending? That would make no sense, although I must admit, it is slightly amusing to picture.

Um, the cover is pretty weak and doesn't reflect the title AT ALL.
