Novelist Philip Roth to win PEN/Faulkner literary award

Novelist Philip Roth has won the PEN/Faulkner literary award for 'Everyman', his short, dreary novel about illness and mortality. PEN/Faulkner judge Debra Magpie Earling said on Monday she was impressed by Roth's undeviating look at life and how he manages to wrestle with grief and the immensity of losing oneself. Image courtesy of RandomhouseRoth is the first three-time winner in the history of the PEN/Faulkner Award, founded in 1980. He was formerly awarded in 1994 for 'Operation Shylock' and in 2001 for 'The Human Stain'. He will receive $15,000.Charles D'Ambrosio's 'The Dead Fish Museum', Deborah Eisenberg's 'Twilight of the Superheroes', Amy Hempel's 'The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel' and Edward P. Jones' 'All Aunt Hagar's Children' were the runners-up.
