Budd, an avid knitter and author of several knitting books has brought together an interesting mix of twenty-six scarf and shawl patterns covering a broad range of techniques. The Cable-y Cowl uses a chunky weight yarn and fat cables to create a quick-to-knit piece that would make a great last minute gift. In contrast, the Pleated Chevrons is an elegant design worked in sportweight yarn and a clever mix of knit and purl stitches with working one stitch below. One skein of sock yarn is all it takes to work the easy wearing Cable-Edged Shawlette with gently curving tails and nice textural details. Lace knitters will enjoy the Ring of Roses cowl that utilizes an old lace pattern and carefully placed increases to create a nice collar effect. While great fun to look at, the Three-D Entrelac Scarf seems like a whole lot of knitting for a scarf but when it’s done, it would certainly be a one of a kind piece.

As with any pattern collection, some designs will leap out at your while others, not so much, but overall there are plenty of projects that will appeal to knitters from beginner to advanced. Most patterns include line-by-line instructions as well as charts and for colorwork, the graphs are colored. There is a wealth of information in the Design Notebook including ideas for quick, one-skein projects, how to design your own scarf or wrap, making cables without a cable needle (I’ve been known to use toothpicks) and finishing details. The photography is excellent, frequently showing more then one view of the item and each pattern includes a design techniques and stitch guide sidebar so knitters can review construction details before casting on. If you are looking for portable projects, this is a good book to have on the shelf.
