Book Review: Glitter Artistry

Glitter’s not just for child’s play anymore! Now it’s a sophisticated, high-quality product available in hundreds of sparkling shades, sizes, and styles. Barbara Trombley—the owner of Art Glitter, Inc.—has pioneered the field, creating unique colors and designing her own magnificent line of cards. Who better to explain the entire dazzling process? She discusses the difference between opaque and transparent glitters; the diverse sizes, from chunky to ultra fine; the categories ...more

If you think glitter is just that sparkly stuff you used on paper plates as a kid, think again. Thanks in large part to Trombley’s ongoing love affair, glitter has grown up and is now an elegant way of creating distinctive cards, tags and gift bags. During her twenty years experience working with glitter, Trombely developed a full range of colors, textures, adhesives and stamps that have pushed the boundaries and turned glitter into an art form.

Starting with an introduction to the basic tools and techniques, readers then dive into an array of projects complete with carefully written, step-by-step instructions, detailed photography and a wealth of helpful tips including how to keep glitter under control. The Recycled Gift Bag transforms a plan brown bag into a special presentation with the addition of buttons, a few stamps and a piece of lace. A number projects demonstrate how to turn left over fabric scraps and swatches into distinctive special occasion cards that are certain to be treasured by the lucky recipients. The Fish Gift Tags are a hoot as fabric fish are transformed into a stringer anglers are sure to treasure.

Most crafters will already have some stamps, embossing powders and other supplies on hand making it easy to get started right away with the addition of some specialized adhesives. Full size patterns and a source list located at the back greatly simplify finding materials by including website addresses. This is an excellent introduction to the grown-up world of glitter that will expand the scope of scrapbookers and cardmakers.
