Book Review: Beaded Weddings, 75+ Fabulous Ideas by Jean Campbell

If you are looking for some special, personalized touches to turn a wedding into a truly memorable event, then check out the often simple yet tasteful projects presented by Interweave Press. Most of the jewelry designs like the Grecian Headband or Flapper Bride Pearls necklace are quick to make and easy enough for the beginner to tackle with ease. The assorted handmade invitations and table accents are lovely although the bride would do well to plan in advance as they are frequently time consuming to create. Nearly all the patterns shown incorporate white crystal AB beads which are easily replaced with different colors to fit in with the bride’s wishes.

Only the Bride Carolyn’s Wedding Purse is beyond the reach of the novice beader. Many designs are suitable for older children to help with; several require only bead stringing while others use basic wire working skills and minimal tools. Clear illustrations and written directions accompany the detailed materials and tools list that is conveniently highlighted in a colored sidebar. Helpful tips from a wedding planner are scattered throughout the book offering sage advice on such things as embellishing the wedding gown and the importance of earrings. The section on bead embroidery is especially nice with close-up photography showing the results. Terrifically Tacky Tape, hot glue, wire and silver paint all contribute to making things as easy to make as possible yet avoids the “loving hands at home” look.
