Books - Boy on a String : From Cast-Off Kid to Filmmaker through the Magic of Dreams
Boy on a String is the inspirational story of Joe Jacoby, who worked in the early days of live TV and went on to become a pioneering filmmaker. Until now, he has never revealed that his childhood was spent in foster homes and institutions. A colleague and friend of Martin Scorcese, Jacoby survived a childhood wrought with abuse and neglect. When he was seven years old, Jacoby's mother was deemed insane. He grew up in seven foster homes, and two institutions -- one for emotionally disturbed children. Jacoby went on to realize his passion for movies and make his first theatrical feature at age 27, which is now a part of the Museum of Modern Art's permanent archives. This book also recounts Jacoby's work as a puppeteer in the 1960s and 70s for the Bunin Puppets and later Bil and Cora Baird's Marionettes. As a filmmaker, he has written, directed, and produced four theatrical features, is the author of numerous screenplays, worked with Joseph E. Levine -- the last of the movie moguls -- and conceptualized and taught a course at The New School called The Making of the Independent Feature.
