mars.jpg

This image, one of the first captured by NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander, shows the vast plains of the northern polar region of Mars. The flat landscape is strewn with tiny pebbles and shows polygonal cracking, a pattern seen widely in Martian high latitudes and also observed in permafrost terrains on Earth. The polygonal cracking is believed to have resulted from seasonal freezing and thawing of surface ice.

Phoenix touched down on the Red Planet at 4:53 p.m. Pacific Time (7:53 Eastern Time), May 25, 2008, in an arctic region called Vastitas Borealis, at 68 degrees north latitude, 234 degrees east longitude.

frog.jpgAn Photo released by Foto Hofer on 26 May 2008 shows the controversial work depicting a crucified frog. A sculpture of a crucified frog that went on show in a Bolzano museum this weekend has sparked a backlash from local clerics and politicians who want the work removed.

The metre-high work by late German artist Martin Kippenberger belongs to his Fred the Frog series and depicts a warty, pop-eyed amphibian nailed to a cross with a frothing mug of beer in one hand.

Curators at Bolzano museum of modern art Museion said that Kippenberger's work was a self-portrait of the artist 'in a state of profound crisis', but their explanation has been given short shrift by local bishop Wilhelm Egger. 'The crucified frog has shocked many visitors to the Museion and has hurt their religious feelings,' Egger said. EPA/FOTO HOFER/HANDOUT

Harrowing scenes for the last week coming out of China. What strikes me about this one is the finality and end of hope that the demolition brings.

With the focus on Iraq and Afghanistan easy to forget the US has so many naval assets all over the globe. Ships on parade always stir something I find, maybe all those Patrick O'Brien novels I have read.

Most of the shots we published this week have been of rioters or people who have been attacked. I thought this one was a good reminder of the people often impacted the most by this sort of thing, children.
