Sarah Palin, the surprise selection for the position of Republican nominee, has shot to prominence since she received an unexpected nod from Senator McCain last weekend to serve as his running mate. She brings undoubted talents and excitement to the somewhat staid McCain campaign but will her lack of experience prove a problem?
In a mirror choice to the Democratic party who brought in the experienced Joe Biden to balance the inexperience of Barack Obama at the top of their ticket, the young, gun-totin', pro-hunting, moose meat-eating, pro-life, activist Christian Governor of Alaska has been drafted, at least in part, to balance out Senator McCain's advanced years, add some glitz to the GOP campaign and draw back support from moral conservatives.
In the days since the announcement, she has galvanised the religious right of the Republican party, many of whom had expressed suspicions over Senator's McCain's somewhat chequered record on support for abortion rights and dismissal of moral issues activists as "agents of intolerance". Many of the religious right who had played such a major role in the election of George Bush in 2000 and 2004 were expected to turn their back on the Arizona senator in his run for president.
Indeed something akin to shock had set in amongst moral crusaders recently after news had leaked that McCain was considering choosing a vice presidential running mate who supported a woman's right to choose.
However the rumour was scotched by the choosing of the pro-life Governor and the vital evangelical voter has been greatly bolstered by the choice says this Washington Post report.
Before long TV footage of her in military uniform, firing weapons at a rifle range, inspecting troops from the Alaskan State Guard in Iraq received blanket coverage on U.S. (and world) television screens in vision guaranteed to appeal to conservative voters.
After the initial shock of the announcement has sunk in -- the Democrats first commercial after the appointment didn't even mention Mrs Palin -- strategy seems to have settled on highlighting the Governor's almost complete lack of experience in foreign policy, an area recently shored up on the Democratic side by the nomination of the highly experienced, if bland, Joe Biden.
Biden has been senator for Delaware since 1973 and during that time has served on numerous foreign policy committees, including his current role as president of the powerful Foreign Relations Committee.
However after hammering away for months about Obama's perceived lack of experience, particularly in the field of foreign affairs compared to his own, the decision by Senator McCain to choose a running mate how makes Obama look wise and experienced in comparison has many Republican insiders scratching their heads. The appointment of the photogenic Governor will no doubt serve to draw attention to McCain's own age, he is 72, and may focus voters to the obvious, yet unspoken fact that Gov. Palin is duty-bound to accept the role of president should McCain become incapacitated or worse.
The well-focused attack by the Republicans that Obama is not ready to be president will now ring hollow in light of the recent nomination of the Governor.
The Obama campaign has so far steered clear of overt criticism of Governor Palin though she has been the target of completely unfounded blogger allegations that her child, born in April, was actually her daughters. Senator McCain, while saying he had "no evidence" the Obama campaign
was behind the rumours, appeared to obliquely blame Sen. Obama for the attacks.

Despite the huge influx of oil money from royalties for Alaskan oil exports, Governor Palin is in serious trouble with the legislature and voters in Alaska. The Vice Presidency would present a golden parachute to save from her mistakes in Alaska.
In picking Governor Palin as his choice for Vice President, John McCain, in his only Presidential decision to date, has incontrovertibly demonstrated that he values political expediency more than sound government.

Palin did a very nice job last night at the convention. No doubt she's a good speaker. However, like many republicans she says one thing and does another. She has traditional values (including I suspect abstinence in sex education) but has a daughter who is pregnant. She was for the bridge before she was against it. And she takes some moral high ground but is under investigation in her own state.
So she sold the jet on ebay; drives herself to work; and dumped the governor's chef. These are domestic (as in at home) decisions.
That her state is close to Russia does not make her an expert on Russia. She's close to the North Pole too--perhaps she can tell me if there's a Santa?
By the way in the speeches at the conventions (last night especially) it seems that American politicians have lost all sense of decorum. Rudi was just mean. Maybe he's bitter. Nonetheless, it sets a really bad example for American children. What a shame.

What's the difference between Sarah Palin and Barack Obama?
One is a well-dressed empty-headed unprepared good-looking, and, let's be honest, pretty sexy piece of eye-candy.
The other kills her own food.
By way of qualification, I've lived in Alaska since 1972 and have seen governors come and go.
Governor Palin was elected by an incredibly wide margin, handily replacing (she beat him in the primary) the former governor who was obviously in the pockets of the big oil companies. His major accomplishment was an attempt to give them essentially a free pass on taxes for forty-five (yes, that's right, 45) years.
She has presided over a massive housecleaning and engendered some extreme bitterness among "old guard" Republicans. No, she is not without flaws, but most of what you're reading is fabrication and distortion being churned out by a handful of malcontents whose long-favored political "assets" are already in federal prison. It would not surprise were it to emerge that some of these big oil companies are funding the vicious attacks on Mrs. Palin's person and family.
Though her experience is limited, her executive positions are real. On the other hand, "Barry" Obama has absolutely zero executive experience. Their foreign policy experience is approximately equal. The major difference is that Ms. Palin is running for Vice President where she can develop her skills. Obama is running for President, a job for which OJT is an invitation to the Putins and Achminijads of the world.
The Democrats would like you to believe Obama and Mrs. Palin are running for the same office. They are not. In any case, were they both running for Vice President then I'd still have to say Mrs. Palin has the experience edge. It would be fair to say that Obama might make a quite suitable Vice President but not that Biden might make a good president. Perhaps if obama were seeking to be Mrs. Clinton's Vice President the picture might be brighter.

Here are my thoughts. As a lifelong dem, I changed my party affiliation to vote for a friend. But I still choose to vote for the person....NOT just the party. I will NOT be voting for B O, not because of his color, but because of some of his friends, his total lack of experience,etc. He will send this country into a very bad tailspin. People talk about a pretty face in Palin. Yet, the young people I talk to about B O are drawn to him by his personality. That's right. When asked to name five things he's accomplished in Congress....they simply CANNOT.
If you disagree with McCain, as I certainly do in some areas, ok. But when you look at the actual people he's taken on, I'm giving him the chance to take on the establishment. When you line him up at the hip with Bush, you "choose" to ignore the fact that he hasn't always. You cannot even admit that statements made about B O by top Dems are deadly to his election bid. Hilary and even his gumba Biden have told you why he shouldn't be elected. But again, you "choose" not to listen.
As for Sarah Palin, I don't totally share her beliefs either, BUT, I'm darned sure that she is MUCH more experienced to run this country. If you think that ANY president including your buddy Bill handled all their own foreign affairs thinking, and other key departments....you're a dreamer. Each president has advisors for a reason. They are NOT know-it-alls. At least McCain admits the failures of Congress, and wants to do something. Don't forget, B O was a part of that same Congress. Oprah, some journalists, and the media, are zoning in on Sarah for personal reasons....and that's because they won't acknowledge that she DOES have that experience. I agree with both above. As a former Democrat, with all of the nasty sexist comments coming out of the Liberal community, I made the right decision to become a Republican.
You male Liberal pu$$ies are threatened by strong women...ie...Hillary Clinton and now Sarah Palin. Governor Palin represents all that we women are and face in America like a child going to war, teen pregnancy, having a child with disabilites, raising children, working, staying fit and sexy, being a member of the NRA...she can't be more perfect. Too true; and it is so sad. The fact of the matter is this. A ton of these uneducated, xenophobic bigots make up a large percentage of our November votes. Many of them do base their choice on looks, religion, and traditional party "values" (hunting & gun toting?! using zero contraceptives?! denying global warming?! being in a state of perpetual war?! destroying the so-called feminization of the western male?!) in lieu of the ever important strengths of intellect, policy and goals. Please people, wake up and don't look at skin color or use xenophobic (which means fear of difference/strange) remarks in regards to this election. It goes beyond race and party. Look at the people and their values. We don't need four more years of these anti-constitutional goons in the White House. I don't want the elusive polar bear to be viewed as an "economic threat". If my 12 year old daughter got preganant from consensual sex I would seriosuly question my parenting skills- but hey, us Dems like teaching our children "sex ed in kindergarten" just like McShame said, so there is a thin chance that would happen. If my 12 year old did get pregnant by choice, I would take her to go terminate the preganacy and get her into some serious therapy. A child has no reason to giving birth to another child.

Higher taxes are coming to America, regardless of who governs. Since Bush came to power Federal debt in the US has climbed from $5.7 trillion to $9.9 trillion. during Clintons rule debt went from $4.2 trillion to $5.7 trillion.....and yet the republicans still like to call the Democrats Tax and Spend...facts never seem to come into play when Jesus is on your side I guess.

I'd be interested to know what your "humble experience" is. Too often people in the debate spout off inaccuracies/prejudices without any factual information. Those people wanting to believe this have their opinion reinforced and those disbelieving it tend to take a diametrically opposed view. The key to ANY learning is education.
Giving kids education prepares them for the world. I would rather that Mrs. Palin's daughter was taught the proper use of birth control/condoms than have some teen mother with a "redneck" boyfriend who has "no interest" in children try to bring up a child with an education that ends before high school does.
