Post mortems and in-depth discussions from Washington insiders have flowed freely following Friday's first McCain-Obama debate with the majority of pundits seeming to agree that neither side came out the winner in a spirited contest. Both Obama and McCain traded blows on issues ranging from foreign affairs to the economy without landing any killer punches though importantly neither contender produced any major gaffes - a big consideration for both campaign teams.

This was a typical example of the analysis:

"It was one of the more competent debates we've seen in a long time. There were no major gaffes. It was data-driven, and both spoke clearly to their constituencies, as they should have," says Allan Louden, a debate expert at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. "I would rate it as a draw, but if it's a draw, the draw goes to the challenger and that would be Obama." [source]

So it was down to perceptions with the tough, nuggety Senator from Arizona reinforcing his reputation as an experienced, down-to-earth debater with Senator Obama looking more cool and dispassionate. For this observer, though it seemed a draw, it was McCain who took the spoils, recovering from a disastrous week where the financial melt-down on Wall Street threatened to derail his campaign. Far from seeming out of sorts on the economy, it seemed that McCain reassured his supporters with his fighting display.

With the economy seemingly headed for dark days, could it be that voters may see the experienced McCain as the preferred option for president, over the inexperienced Obama?

This BBC article gives an interesting slant on the first debate:

Expect much more on the economy in those confrontations and, if the polls show that Mr McCain's more aggressive tone has paid off in this first clash, expect all the debates which follow to be a little more bad-tempered and direct than this one. [source]
However polls taken since the debate have continued to show Obama edging ahead though with the margin very close across the battleground states. Will the perception of the Bush administration as being "asleep at the wheel" during the financial meltdown infect the McCain campaign? Or will the doughty ex Vietnam hero convince the American people of his maverick status and independence from the tainted Bush administration?

Bush, McCain can run. But they cant hide anymore.

What ever congress does to try and fix our stunning economic catastrophe needs to be done very carefully. Congress needs to take their time, and be sure of what they are doing. Whatever is done needs to be sharply focused at helping, and protecting the best interest of the ordinary Americans. In particular the vast American middle class. 700 billion dollars is a lot of the peoples money to spend to bail out a bunch of corrupt Bush loan sharks.

When have you ever known any government plan, or project to only cost what the government said it would. Remember the war in Iraq. Bush and his so-called advisers said it would only cost you about 80 billion dollars. But we now know that the war in Iraq will cost you, and your children, and your grand children over a trillion dollars, and still counting.

So if 80 billion can end up costing you over a trillion dollars. How much could 700 billion end up costing you. Any math wizards out there. I come up with 9 trillion...:-(

My fellow human beings, just as I warned you ahead of this catastrophic economic meltdown, I must now warn you that what is ahead has the potential to be even more catastrophic than what we are going through now. The worlds geopolitical landscape has been booby trapped by the Bush McCain administration and their republican allies in congress. These booby traps are poised to spring at any time.

Fortunately the Worlds Nations have been blessed with many excellent leaders (except the US) who have been careful, wise, strong, and self-restrained in dealing with the provocations, and antagonism's of the Bush, McCain administration.

Barack Obama and the democrats are your best hope now. Tell your family, friends, and everyone you know to support them as best you can, and vote for them like your life, and the lives of your loved ones depends on it. Because it does. You will not survive 4 more years of Bush McCain.

JACK SMITH - WORKING CLASS...

A good solution should be to nationalize te banks;that means getting shares or equity for the money spent on bailing out the Wall STreet bankers. The money could well be raised by roaming off the incredible profits made by the oil tycoons .That's a perfect win-win situation for the american people .Unless of course somebody comes up with a better alternative .Giving away the tax payer's money in return for nothing is only making one look like incredibly stupid .

offer more to the voter mcain.offer more than obama and say it continually in the debate.the only way is to buy the election.offer bigger tax cuts offer bigger pensions amd repeat it ad nauseum -yhere is no way you could lose.i honly hope you read this before its too late-cant you see obamas offers more.

beat those islamofascists mcain but buy the election mcain offer more than obama

McCain - Palin a disaster for the American people waiting to happen. smell the coffee, jack, jac, and joe, (jack, jac, and joe)same person. Your'e and idiot.

Right, give 850Billion to the same clowns who caused the problem in the first place. The same congressional
people who were suppose to oversee Fredy / May are now leading the bailout. They should be strung from the nearest pole. (marble mouth and Dod! you hear!)

O Yes, and lets not forget the common voter as well. Their lack of participation in the voting process keeps these incompetents in power.

Bottom line is we the people have the power to throw these bums out every few years and we should. That's the only way to limit corruption and damage to this great nation.

Joe Biden disgraced himself in the debate:

1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”

4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.

5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.

6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.

9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”

14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won’t pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

Rather than giving away thetaxpayer's money to the Wall Street tycoons you could use the recipe that was applied to Fortis bank here in europe a few days ago by ther Belgian,Dutch and Luxemburg governments .The governments took ove 49,9 percent of the shares of the bank at current rate, got the majority of nominees in the administrative board, aufiting and contol rights to even further regulate and control what is going on in the bank.Simple and quick with a advantage points compared to the Bush-Paulson plan drwan up by the bankers .Buyinf into the banks, not simply taking over toxic assets ,delivers the same result of recapitalizing the banks but also guaranteed a return for the taxpayer as the shares bought by the government rise after the crisis.Injecting 700 billion dollars with this recipe could well generate e threefold profit after a few years due to the increased value of the shared. The reluctance of the Bush government to implement any other solution than just handing over a blank check without any conditions says enough about who controls your government. It might be called a democracy and you might be able to vote for one out of two candidates but in troubled times like this it is evident who pulls the strings .
There are so many ways to help creating a better economy even other than that, like taxing speculative stock transactions, those made on a time lapse of less than a two year time base .
None of that is even considered, that clearly shows, again who pulls the strings.
Meanwhile a facade of window dressing is being created by the GOP with the hockey mum appealing to joe sixpack ,promising to create a new type of government, close to the average american. All spin and no substance .Behind the curtains the bankers pulling the strings are laughing again, you are buying their faiy tales.

Tonny, fix your own crappy country.

Debate: did McCain do enough?

The fact is: He has not done anything yet.

If he gets elected president I hope that his promises do not turn out to be lies like just about every other previous president.

If history is any guidance then he is probably a con artist and a fraudster.

Here’s what McCain has to say about the wonders of market-based health reform:

Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.

So McCain, who now poses as the scourge of Wall Street, was praising financial deregulation like 10 seconds ago — and promising that if we marketize health care, it will perform as well as the financial industry

you have to spend throw the lolies at the people they will catch them.just pledge 5 or 6 things but people dont give a shit if you spend billions on the rich and pork barrel projects as long as you spend billions on them-how much will be in my pocket-mcain you must say this in the next debate-yalk bread and butter -get to the point i sometimes wish palin was runing for president-we all knoe obama willincrease our taxes giving us nothing-what about paid parental leave making it easier for students simplifying tax system-making it easier for all who have been unemplyed 0r sick give them an increase-tough on crime you have to grovel mcaijn palinto thre hurting poor suck up to them i sometimes wish sarah wae in the next debate to help mcain abit she has the savvy to win this

obama knoes mcain hates giving away to much money so he can suck up to our wallets i dont understand amm i the only one who knows its the money in the back pocket that matter, suck up to the poor palin its that easy.

NOOBAMA. Ever.

This country has a demographics mega-problem, as does the entire Western World. Where are the young? Where have all the flowers gone? Doesn't anyone see that our social policies have decimated the populations of the world and that the global financial crisis is just the beginning of bad times to come. 40,000,000 have never seen the light of day in America alone, and Italians are doomed for extinction in 50 years. Where are the environmentalists for humans? Mortgage bankers created new financial "products" to suck the last bit of money out of the system because they knew the prices were going to fall on homes when there was no one to buy them.
Or maybe I'm giving them too much credit for being smart. Maybe they just assumed that the game they were playing would pay off big for them, but there are no takers for the homes they confiscated. Hello? Is anyone listening?

The words of Vice President Henry Wallace in 1944:

"The really dangerous American fascist is the man who wants to do in the United States in an American way what Hitler did in Germany in a Prussian way. The American fascist would prefer not to use violence. His method is to poison the channels of public information. With a fascist the problem is never how best to present the truth to the public but how best to use the news to deceive the public into giving the fascist and his group more money or more power.

They claim to be super patriots, but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. They demand free enterprise but are spokesman for monopoly and vested interest. Their final objective toward which all their deceit is directed is to capture political power so that, using the power of the state and the power of the market simultaneously, they may keep the common man in eternal subjugation.”
