The Washington Post controversially marked the passing of noted North Carolina conservative Jesse Helms with a rerun of an article it first published in August 29, 2001, one week after Helms announced his retirement from the Senate.

What is unique about Helms -- and from my viewpoint, unforgivable -- is his willingness to pick at the scab of the great wound of American history, the legacy of slavery and segregation, and to inflame racial resentment against African Americans.
To the best of my knowledge, Helms has never done what the late George Wallace did well before his death -- recant and apologize for his use of racial issues. And that use was blatant. [source]
Supporters though consider the long serving senator as a true American patriot
and possibly the last in a long line of traditional southern
conservatives. Formerly a Democrat, he left the party and joined the Republicans once the Democrat begun to swing their support behind civil rights for black people.
Helms saw himself as a man of principle and a "thorn in the side" of liberals. From the senator's memoirs written in 2005, he said:
"I had sought election in 1972 to try to derail the freight train of liberalism that was gaining speed toward its destination of government-run everything, paid for with big tax bills and record debt," Helms wrote in his 2005 memoir, "Here's Where I Stand."
"My goal, when my wife, Dot, and I decided I would run, was to stick to my principles and stand up for conservative ideals." [source]
