"We are deeply grateful for the amazing dedication and remarkable spirit of the entire cast, crew and creative team of The Mambo Kings," said Daryl and Jordan Roth. "While we had pursued several incredibly talented people to join the team and help us realize the full potential of the show, it became apparent to us all that the production could not successfully go forward on the current schedule."
The musical premiered at San Francisco's Golden Gate Theater. on May 31st to negative reviews. It was to have opened on August 18th at the Broadway Theater.
Last week Jerry Mitchell, Jason Robert Brown, and David Ives were reportedly brought in to try and save the show.
Set to star were Esai Morales, Jaime Camill, Albita, Justina Machado, David Alan Grier, Cote de Pablo, Christiane Noll, Allen Hidalgo, and Dennis Staroselsky.
In The Mambo Kings, two Cuban brothers travel to New York in 1949 to try to break into the Latin music scene. The musical is based on the novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love by Oscar Hijuelos.
