The Glass Menagerie Opens Today

The production had originally starred Dallas Roberts as Tom Wingfield, but he mysteriously left the production and was replaced by Christian Slater. Opening night was delayed a week to give Slater more time to prepare for the role.
The production is directed by David Leveaux who most recently directed Fiddler on the Roof. The Glass Menagerie originally premiered on Broadway at the Playhouse Theater in 1945.
The play tells the story of a St. Louis family struggling to cope with the harsh realities of the Great Depression and the bitter memories that haunt them. Revealed in flashback, the play follows the lives of shoe factory worker Tom, torn between his role as the family breadwinner and the desire to lead a life of his own. His abrasive mother, Amanda, once a Southern socialite, tries to maintain her dignity amidst the gloom of the tenement, and secure a future for her painfully shy daughter, Laura, who has retreated to an imaginary world caring for her collection of glass animals.

The book is great. I would also like to see the play. I am wrighting an Essay on how crippled Laura really is. Not because of her knee but because of her infenority complex. I am comparing her to Christy Brown in 'My Left Foot'. Christy Brown who had only the use of his left foot actually went somewhere with his life. He was pshicaly crippled but did not let them stop hime, while Laura could move perfectly fine and did not leave the house.

Finally read the book. I really like it. Wish I could go and see the play. Will read about it on the net.
Its a great play, great book.
