No official reason was given for Roberts' departure, but understudy Joey Collins will perform the role until Slater is ready, which will probably be sometime next week. The show begins previews on February 24th and opens on March 15th.
Slater will join Jessica Lange as Amanda Wingfield, Sarah Paulson as Laura Wingfield, and Josh Lucas as Jim O'Connor, the gentleman caller.
Slater earned good reviews for his turn this past fall in One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest in London, and last appeared on Broadway in Side Man.
The Glass Menagerie tells the story of a St. Louis family struggling to cope with the harsh realities of the Great Depression and the bitter memories that haunt them. Revealed in flashback, the play follows the lives of shoe factory worker Tom, torn between his role as the family breadwinner and the desire to lead a life of his own. His abrasive mother, Amanda, once a Southern socialite, tries to maintain her dignity amidst the gloom of the tenement, and secure a future for her painfully shy daughter, Laura, who has retreated to an imaginary world caring for her collection of glass animals.
