PBS' Evening at Pops Program will feature several Broadway themed events.
Here are a few to look out for:
July 18, 2004: Vanessa Williams
In this star-powered episode, EVENING AT POPS welcomes the incomparable Grammy Award-winning Vanessa Williams, conductor Keith Lockhart's guest for a tribute to landmark black Broadway musicals and their performers. Known for her award-winning pop songs, Vanessa has also starred in several Broadway musicals including Kiss of the Spider Woman and Into the Woods. The Boston Pops Orchestra accompanies Vanessa for a tribute to black musicals featuring "Beat Out Da Rhythm On A Drum" from Carmen Jones; "Taking A Chance On Love" from Cabin in the Sky; "Come Rain Or Come Shine" from St. Louis Woman; and more. As special encores, Vanessa delights the audience with her hits "Colors Of The Wind" and "Save the Best for Last."
July 25, 2004: John WilliamsFeaturing a Tribute to Bernard Herrmann and Henry Mancini, with Julie Andrews, Blake Edwards, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Mancini's daughter Monica Mancini
Boston Pops Conductor Laureate, John Williams, continues his tradition of saluting film music giants in this episode of EVENING AT POPS by saluting unique collaborations between directors and composers. The program kicks off with a special tribute to Bernard Herrmann, whose scores for Alfred Hitchcock films like Psycho and Vertigo thrilled and scared an entire generation of moviegoers, as well as heavily influenced future film composers, including Maestro Williams himself. Then, special guests -- the legendary Julie Andrews and Academy Award-winning Blake Edwards -- join Mr. Williams to pay tribute to another distinguished film scorer, their longtime friend and colleague, Henry Mancini. Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell (Ragtime, Kiss Me Kate, Man of La Mancha) is also on hand to perform "Whistling Away The Dark" from Darling Lili; "The Days of Wine and Roses" and other enduring Mancini classics. Finally, Mancini's daughter Monica Mancini, herself a celebrated singer, will join Mitchell to perform "Moon River." Maestro Williams and the Pops will also accompany montages from Psycho, in additional to a montage of other Alfred Hitchcock/Bernard Herrmann films; as well as Henry Mancini/Blake Edwards films.
August 1, 2004: "From Screen to Stage:" Kristin Chenoweth and Rob Marshall
This special episode of EVENING AT POPS takes us from the silver screen of Hollywood to the fabled stages of the Great White Way. Broadway sensation Kristin Chenoweth, currently starring in the smash hit musical Wicked, joins conductor Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra to pay tribute to movie musicals that became Broadway musicals, including "Let Yourself Go" from Swingtime; and "Apartment 14G" from Thoroughly Modern Millie. She will also perform her celebrated version of "Glitter And Be Gay" from Candide. Then, Keith welcomes his longtime friend and college classmate Rob Marshall, the Academy Award-nominated director of the multi-Oscar winning screen musical Chicago, who is on-hand to discuss some of those popular films that went on to become Broadway musicals.
August 22, 2004: A Tribute to Jerry Herman Featuring Faith Prince, Marin Mazzie, George Hearn, John Barrowman
Join Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra as the 34th Season of EVENING AT POPS kicks off with a tribute to legendary Broadway composer Jerry Herman. In honor of Herman's 70th birthday, celebrities from the Great White Way -- including Tony-award winner Faith Prince, Marin Mazzie, and John Barrowman perform songs from the hits Hello, Dolly!, La Cage aux Folles, and Mame. Tune in as Herman shares stories from his prolific career, and for an evening of show-stopping numbers from today's brightest Broadway stars.
