UCLA TFT's 22nd Annual Film Festival begins June 7, full schedule

UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and Dean Teri Schwartz present the 22nd Annual Film Festival will honor leaders in film this June.

The week-long event begins Friday, June 7 and showcases extraordinary films from UCLA/TFT students, in addition to recognizing industry leaders for the contributions they have made in their field. 

The festival’s inaugural TV Night will feature the world premiere of a first-of-its-kind, full length television pilot, “doubleblind,” written, produced, directed, designed and shot by UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television students. This is the first time a project of this magnitude has been done at any film/theater school in the world.

Saturday, June 8

Design Showcase West 2:00 PM Freud Playhouse, UCLA

Freud Playhouse is located on the northeast corner of UCLA’s campus. Enter at

Wyton Drive and Hilgard Avenue. Parking is $6 per entry in Lot 3.

The prestigious Design Showcase West, created and hosted by UCLA/TFT’s Department of Theater, is the only national entertainment design showcase on the West Coast. The event features student work from the nation’s top university design programs, including costume, lighting, scenic and sound design for entertainment         producers, directors and a-list designers to identify the top talent graduating this year. DSW is co-hosted by the Art Directors Guild, Costume Designers Guild, Set Decorators Society of America and United Scenic Artists.

Saturday, June 8

Honoree: Shane Acker – Crystal Anvil Award Recipient

Animation Prom features the finest work from UCLA/TFT’s Animation Workshop, which has a storied history of developing many of the preeminent animators working in the industry today.

Sunday, June 9

The New Works Program features short films from UCLA/TFT undergraduate and graduate filmmakers

Screenwriters Showcase 7:30 PM Writers Guild of America Theater

Honoree: David Magee – Excellence in Screenwriting Award Recipient

Screenwriters Showcase celebrates the extraordinary work of UCLA/TFT graduate screenwriting students. The eight award-winning graduate scripts were selected by a panel of more than 200 judges, with portions of the scripts being previewed in five-minute staged excerpts. In addition, one undergraduate script was selected by a panel of judges from United Talent Agency.

Tuesday, June 11

Producers Marketplace 7:30 PM Skirball Cultural Center

Four UCLA/TFT graduate students were chosen from the distinguished Producers Program as finalists for Producers Marketplace.  Each student presented their feature  film to a panel of top-tier industry judges.

The finalists will take the stage to present their projects in five-minute concept pitches, fielding questions from the judges. The judges will select the most promising proposal for the Jury Award.  In addition, the audience will select its favorite pitch for the Audience Award.  These awards are accompanied by a generous cash donation funded by Producer/Alumnus Dan Angel.

Wednesday, June 12

TV Night 7:30 PM James Bridges Theater, UCLA

James Bridges Theater is located on the northeast corner of UCLA’s campus. Enter at

Wyton Drive and Hilgard Avenue. Parking is $6 per entry in Lot 3.   

This inaugural night features the world premiere screening of a first-of-its-kind, full length television pilot "doubleblind," written, produced, directed, designed and shot by current TFT students. Noted television pilot/episodic director Rod Holcomb (“ER” pilot, “China Beach” pilot, “Elementary”) and veteran feature producer Beau Marks (“The Hunt for Red October,” “Die Hard,” “Straw Dogs”) will lead a panel of student filmmakers in a discussion of the creative process and collaborative effort that went into the creation of TFT's first television pilot.

Thursday, June 13

Directors Spotlight 7:30PM Directors Guild of America Theater

Honoree: Ben Affleck -- Filmmaker of the Year Award

The films showcased in Directors Spotlight were chosen by a special Blue Ribbon panel of industry professionals who selected 10 Spotlight winners from the highest rated films screened during Judging Weekend.
