New York - Edvard Munch's The Scream, one of the most iconic images in modern art, is to be sold at a New York auction in May and could fetch more than 80 million dollars, Sotheby's auction house said Tuesday.
The 1895 portrayal of a man holding his head and screaming is one of four versions of the masterpiece painted by the Norwegian artist. It is being sold by Norwegian businessman Petter Olsen, whose father was a friend and patron of the artist. It is the only version of the iconic painting still in private hands, according to Sotheby's.
Sotheby's said the work will go on sale on May 2 after going on view at Sotheby's in London starting April 13 and then in New York starting April 27.
