Broadway reports jump in theatre attendance

New York - Attendance at plays in New York's famous Broadway theatre district jumped 5.4 per cent in the 2010-2011 season, according to the Broadway League Tuesday.
Box office receipts jumped 5.9 per cent to 1.08 billion dollars as over 12.5 million people bought tickets to see shows, according to the theatre association's annual report. During the season 42 new shows opened, including 14 musicals, 25 plays and three specials, while the average ticket price was over 86 dollars.
'The diversity of shows currently on Broadway succeeds in providing something for everyone, so it's no accident that we're having the biggest season in our history,' commented Charlotte St Martin, executive director of The Broadway League.
