New York - A 189-centimetre bronze nude by French impressionist Henri Matisse sold for 48.8 million dollars in New York Wednesday, setting a new record for the artist.
Nu de dos, 4 etat (Back IV), created in 1930, had been estimated at 25 to 35 million dollars at Christie's first autumn auction, but went for almost double the estimate to the US Gagosian Gallery.
On Tuesday, rival Sotheby's kicked off its season with a record 69-million-dollar sale of a canvas by Amedeo Modigliani.
Another record was set for Spanish artist Juan Gris. His Violon et guitare was auctioned off for more than 28.6 million dollars, beating a previous record of 20.8 million dollars for a work by the artist two years ago.
Sixty-seven of the 84 lots were sold, fetching at total of 231.4 million dollars.
