International Museum of Women announces new curators, more

IMOW announces they have received a prestigious grant award from the American Association of Museums for a forthcoming global online exhibition, Young Women Speaking the Economy, to be debuted online in Spring 2011.

International Museum of Women (IMOW) has announced the new international co-curators for the next Project of Economica: Silvana Gesualdo, Irene Jaievsky, and Claudia Mandel.

Silvana Gesualdo is a museum consultant and art historian from Mexico City, Mexico, who specializes in women artists in history; Irene Jaievsky is a museum curator and stage designer from Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Claudia Mandel is an fine arts and art history professor from Costa Rica.

The new Project of Economica explores how women in Latin America are engaging in the economy, how they have been impacted by the financial crisis, and what their hopes, ideas, and visions are for the economic future of women in their country. IMOW is looking for creative work from or about women in Costa Rica, Mexico, and Argentina, but outstanding work from all countries in Latin America will be given consideration. Who is the Latest Community Choice Award Winner?  Congratulations to Selvaprakash Lakshmanan!

Selvaprakash's submission to Picturing Power & Potential: A Project of Economica, Working for Just Salt, is the latest Picturing Power & Potential Community Choice Award Winner, chosen by viewers.  

Working for Just Salt depicts women salt miners in Tuticorin, India, who struggle to make ends meet under grueling working conditions. One commenter says the work is "Beautiful image of strong women," and suggests that a "Women's Salt March for better wages and work environment in the tradition of Gandhi's Salt March would be a good step in right direction."

There are still three Community Choice Awards to give out from IMOW.  Visit Picturing Power & Potential here to help pick the next Community Choice Award winner by recommending or leaving a comment for your favorite photographs! A new winner will be announced in two weeks.

Picturing Power & Potential is a joint project from the International Museum of Women and the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery's Art at City Hall program. The exhibition is now on display permanently online and in a physical exhibition in San Francisco City Hall through August 27, 2010.

Young Women Speaking the Economy will explore young women's hopes, challenges and ideas at a critical moment for the global economy. Groups of women aged of 18-25 from Denmark, the Philippines, the United States and the Sudan will contribute to the exhibition, sharing perspectives on the economy, careers, well-being and professional life with each other and with the museum's global online audience. The new exhibition will showcase art, dynamic online conversations, and multi-media, and will be featured online at IMOW.org, as well as at events in each partner country!

The museum's partners for the Young Women Speaking the Economy exhibition will include Mills College for Women in Oakland, CA; the Ayala Museum and Miriam College for Women in the Philippines; the Women's Museum and Aarhus University in Denmark; and the Sudanese Women's Museum and Ahfad University for Women in the Sudan.

The International Museum of Women is proud to partner with the Contemporary Jewish Museum for Dancing with Timbrels: Celebrating Womanhood, an event from the CJM's RitLab summer series.

Inspired by the coast-to-coast D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) craft movement, RitLabs are a new series of casual after-work Thursday night drop-ins at the Contemporary Jewish Museum.

For the "Dancing with Timbrels: Celebrating Womanhood" RitLab, participants will create personalized amulets that celebrate womanhood. Snacks, drinks, and craft supplies will be provided!

Join the Global Women's Leadership Network on August 5

The Global Women's Leadership Network invites the public to join them at Santa Clara University on August 5 for "Global Innovation Dialogue: The Power of Transformative Justice," a chance to dialogue with 20 women global leaders from 14 different countries about a new vision for creating social justice and global gender equity.

Join ITVS and the International Museum of Women for an evening of inspiring and compelling films that focus on young women and girls around the world, from Texas to Ghana to Israel. Also IMOW extended Congratulations to IMOW Global Council Member Patricia Licuanan, who was appointed to Chair the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in the Philippines by President Benigno Aquino.

Dr. Licuanan has long been a champion for women's human rights and education, and until recently served as the president of Miriam College in Manila, Philippines before taking the new cabinet position.  She also served as chair of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women when it was preparing for the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China in 1995, and contributed a story to Economica about the 15th anniversary of that conference, "The Beijing Platform for Women 15 Years Later."
