New York - One of the few self-portraits by iconic pop artist Andy Warhol has sold for 29 million dollars in New York, more than double its estimated price of 10 to 20 million dollars.
The anonymous winning bidder in Wednesday's sale faced a total bill of 32.6 million dollars including the fees added by auction house Sotheby's.
Andy Warhol produced five large-format self-portraits in 1986, shortly before his death. The painting sold in Wednesday's auction was from the collection of US fashion designer Tom Ford.
In the same sale, Mark Rothko's 1961 piece Untitled, estimated at 18 to 25 million dollars, sold for 31.4 million including fees.
