Actors Liev Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson have been announced as the leads in a new Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge at the Cort Theatre.
Performances begin Dec. 28, 2009, with an official opening of Jan. 24, 2010, for fourteen weeks.
Variety announced that the play will be directed by Gregory Mosher, and that Schreiber will play Eddie Carbone; Johannsson will play Carbone's niece Catherine, with whom Carbone is obsessed.
Playbill published the creative team credits thus far: John Lee Beatty will serve as Scenic Design director, Jane Greenwood as Costume Designer, Peter Kaczorowski as Lighting Designer and Scott Lehrer as Sound Designer.
Themes of jealousy, suspicion and betrayal underlie in a slice of 1950's Brooklyn, as dockworker Eddie Carbone who has made a good life for himself and his wife Beatrice. Carbone is a first generation Italian dealing with illegal Italian immigrant family members. Eddie's act of kindness turn into sexual feelings for his niece Catherine. His struggle to contain his emotions leads him on a path of self destruction transforming him from a respected, honorable man to a virtual stranger shamed and broken by his own actions.
Liev Schreiber theater credits include a 2005 Tony Award for Glengarry Glenn Ross. He has appeared on Broadway in Talk Radio (Tony nomination), Betrayal and In the Summer House. He has also appeared in the Public Theater presentations of Macbeth, Henry V, Othello, Hamlet, Cymbeline and The Tempest.
Johansson will be making her Broadway debut.
