London, England : Andrew Lloyd Webber's new, 4 million pound, musical opens today at the Palace Theatre in London. With it begins the musical season in London.
Based on Wilkie Collins'victorian thriller, The Woman In White is billed as a story about a dashing young man, employed as the art tutor to two devoted sisters, who is stranded at a remote railway cutting. Out of the darkness looms a woman, a mysterious figure dressed in white, desperate to share a chilling secret. He and the sisters soon find themselves trapped in a web of betrayal and greed, the victims of a seemingly flawless crime. Together they will need all their resourcefulness and courage to outwit a hugely charismatic and ingenious villain, 'Count Fosco'. As the plot twists and turns, low villainy vies with high romance in a world where nothing is as it first appears and where it is impossible to know who to trust.
Webber collaborated with Charlotte Jones to write the book and American writer, David Zippel supplies the lyrics. World-renowned director Trevor Nunn guides the musical. Michael Crawford, (Webber's original Phantom of the Opera), stars as the villain Count Fosco. He returns to the stage after his last show, Dance of the Vampires , flopped. Mario Friedman co-stars as the heroine Marian Halcombe.
There are high hopes for The Woman In White . It has been compared to the composers hit, The Phantom of the Opera , and they are hoping it can live up to that musical's success. It has a long way to go.
