Bauhaus exhibition set for four Japanese cities

Dessau-Rosslau, Germany - An exhibition of historic drawings and models created by Germany's Bauhaus architectural movement is to begin its tour of four Japanese cities later this month, the Bauhaus Foundation said Monday. The seminal Bauhaus style, with all-glass walls on functional buildings, dominated 20th century architecture worldwide. The no- frills style from Germany before the Nazis also influenced furniture. The Bauhaus school of design built in 1926 in Dessau, Germany is a UNESCO world heritage site. The exhibition from the school's collections will open this April 26 in the University of Arts in Tokyo and continue until March 31 in Shizuoka, Niigata and Tochigi. It will comprise 300 exhibits including students' notes, exercise books, photographs and three-dimensional models used in classes conducted by Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Oskar Schlemmer. Lamps by Marianne Brandt and furniture by Marcel Breuer will round out the show, the foundation announced. The Bauhaus began in 1919 in Weimar, moved to Dessau in 1925 and shifted to Berlin in 1932 before school was closed down by the Nazis.
